Ermentrout received his PhD in Biophysics and Theoretical Biology from the University of Chicago in 1979. After a three-year postdoc at the National Institutes of Health, he became a faculty member in the math department at the University of Pittsburgh, where he remains. Ermentrout applies nonlinear dynamics to problems in neuroscience and other areas of biology. In addition to olfaction, he is very interested in the mechanisms that underlie the complex spatio-temporal dynamics in the cortex.
